Stuart Mobility Family Christmas Traditions

by | Blog

As you will know, at Stuart Mobility we’re very proud to be a family business … we work together all year round and as well as the husband-and-wife team of myself (Justina) and Stuart, our sons Charley and Fredget involved with helping out, too.   We’re a tight-knit unit and we make a good team but outside of work, especially at Christmas, we like to enjoy downtime together as a family, too.  As most families, we’ve got several Christmas traditions that make this time of year extra-special!

1.  Decorating the tree

The festive season always kicks off when the decorations go up at home (and at work!) and putting the tree up is always a family effort.  We’ve got a collection of baubles and decorations from a number of years and it’s lovely to reminisce as we unwrap these and hang them each year.  Some of them are ones the boys made when they were younger, while others are from places we’ve visited over the years.  There are so many memories attached to them and it’s lovely to reminisce as we decorate the tree together (with the obligatory cheesy Christmas music playing in the background!)

2. Christmas films

When it’s cold and dark outside there’s nothing better than snuggling up on the sofa and watching Christmas films under a blanket, with a mug of steaming hot chocolate and mince pies or stollen.  Unfortunately, with two teenage boys, getting everyone to agree on a film and then sit down together is a near impossibility!  So, film time is my time.  I love ‘Love Actually’ – it’s my go-to, feel-good Christmas film and Stuart and the boys know that when that film is on, I’m in full festive mode and not to be disturbed.  They occasionally come in and raise an eyebrow at the soppiness of it all, but I don’t care!

3. Pantomime

Every year, we make time for a family outing to watch a pantomime (oh yes, we do!) and this year is no exception.  We can’t wait to see Mother Goose at Derby Arena, staring Todd Brice (Coronation Street villain, Stephen Reid) and the fabulous award-winning Dame played by Morgan Brind.  It’s such a great tradition and appeals to all ages – unlike the Christmas films, I can’t see the boys ever getting too old to come along to the panto!

4. Christmas dinner

Of course, the highlight of Christmas Day is the dinner – and we love a big feast.  It’s not straightforward in our house as our eldest is a strict vegetarian and Stuart is pescatarian and gluten free … so there’s a lot of planning involved in ensuring everyone gets what they like!  Luckily, I enjoy cooking and making sure everyone’s needs and wishes are catered for.  Sitting down for a meal together is really special and both of our mothers join us for Christmas dinner, too (my mum is 92!) so it’s a real multi-generational family affair.

5. A Boxing Day walk

After the over-indulgence of Christmas Day, we all feel the need for some fresh air and exercise on Boxing Day so we wrap up warm and get out there, whatever the weather, to enjoy the countryside.  We’re blessed to live in a very beautiful part of the country with the Peak District on our doorstep so we try to explore somewhere new each year.  From hiking up hills to taking in the beautiful local lakes and reservoirs, we’ve had some really memorable walks over the years, fuelled by the obligatory picnic of turkey sandwiches, of course!  Sometimes, we combine this with watching some of the other weird and wonderful local traditions, too – such as the Boxing Day raft race in Matlock Bath, where brave souls float down the river Derwent in home-made rafts, watched by crowds of on-lookers.  I’d certainly rather be on the bank cheering than in that freezing cold water!

6. Helping families all year round

We’re privileged, as a family business, to be able to help out lots of other families throughout the year as we provide relatives and loved-ones with chairs that can unlock a new chapter and promote better, health, comfort and independence.  We get to know them throughout the buying and fitting process and we’re welcomed into their home environment to set up their new chair and help them learn how to make the most of its features.  Many of the families keep in touch and it’s so rewarding to hear what a difference our products have made to their daily lives.  As we reflect on a busy year, we look forward to helping many more customers in 2024.

We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year, from the Nurse family.
