Bariatric and Porter Chairs for Heavy People

by | Mar 23, 2026

While all our rise recliners offer excellent support, users with a larger frame and heavier bodyweight require additional support to allow them the level of comfort, confidence and independence that they want and need from their seating: bariatric and porter chairs for heavy people.

Large Chairs for Heavy People – Bariatric Seating

Specially designed bariatric chairs are engineered for higher weight users with every aspect – from design, to materials, to construction – carefully considered and selected to provide the optimum level of support that’s needed. Not only do these chairs this provide the comfort and healthcare that the users require, but they’re also manufactured with increased usability and product longevity in mind, too.

Our bariatric range offers specialised rise recliners and porter chairs for people who exceed the usual 20 and 25 stone weight limit that our standard chairs offer, with options for users from 35 up to 50 stone in weight, with seat widths up to 34”. Made to measure options are also available for chairs built around individual needs.

Wider, deeper seating area on our bariatric chairs

If larger-framed, heavier people use standard seating, they risk pressure sores, rubbing, chafing and discomfort. Their posture will be affected because the traditional frame size isn’t built to accommodate their physical size and they may be forced to slump or slouch in their chair. Specialised bariatric seating provides seat widths of up to 34” inches with additional depth, too, to allow more room for comfort. This increased seating area helps to evenly distribute weight reducing pressure points and helping to mitigate the risk of sores.

Enhanced bariatric cushioning for optimal support

Specialised, ergonomically designed cushioning provides optimal support and promotes good posture which, in turn, can help to improve health and reduce associated postural pain, breathing difficulties and digestive problems caused by poor seating position. Cushions can be made with special pressure relief foam, and many models have the option of breathable, wipeable covers with 4-way stretch to reduce friction for comfort and pressure relief. Adjustability allows individual comfort and adaptability over time as the user’s needs change. All materials are designed with both comfort and durability in mind.

Reinforced frames and lifting capacity for heavier people

To accommodate heavier users, the frames of the bariatric rise recliners are specially reinforced and manufactured using strong materials to ensure the longevity and continued functionality of the chair, with demanding daily use. Leg lifts can support leg weight up to 25 stone, offering peace of mind as you are gently lowered into a reclined position or supported to standing. With the reassurance that your chair has been designed and built to support you, you can enjoy the enhanced independence that this specialist equipment offers.

Our bariatric seating range of options

Because we understand that people come in all shapes and sizes with a range of healthcare and physical needs, our bariatric range offers seating options from 35 stone weight limits, right through to the BLTR Bariatric Chair which has a 50-stone capacity.

This chair’s BLTR action gives users separate control of the back angle, leg rest, tilt and rise functions of the chair. This tilt movement is even more important on a bariatric chair as it allows the legs to be high so pressure can be redistributed around the body when repositioning.
