Tall, Small, What Recliner Chair Is Best for Me?

by | Jan 25, 2026

Sitting comfortably is vital when it comes to being supported and keeping healthy. The wrong support – too little, too much, or just support in the wrong places – can have a negative effect on your body and, consequently, your health. That’s why it’s paramount that our rise recliners are measured and fitted for you personally. A person’s height (and weight) are very important considerations when choosing a chair – but what if you’re particularly tall or small? Can you still have a chair that precisely designed to fit you? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that the answer is … YES!

Getting the right fit…

It’s really important that your chair fits your proportions so that all the cleverly designed support is in the correct position to do its job. Your hips and bottom need to be right at the back of the seat, with your back comfortably resting against the back cushion. Your thighs need to be supported along their entire length by the seat cushion, with your knees bending just beyond the end of the seat, at roughly a 90-degree angle. If your seat is too deep this could cause you to slump forwards, and if it’s too shallow your thighs won’t be supported. When sitting, your feet should rest easily on the floor. They shouldn’t dangle, as this will place unnecessary pressure on your thighs, and you shouldn’t have to stretch them out in front of you either. The seat should also be the correct width. Too narrow, and you could be pinched or experience pressure or chafing … or too wide, and you could risk slipping sideways or slumping due to lack of support. Likewise, the back and head rest should be correctly fitted so that the cushions are in the right places to offer support to your head, neck and lumbar region exactly where you need it. The back should be in a neutral position, with no pelvic tilt, and the head and neck should be comfortably supported, not pushed forwards or falling to either side. A correctly fitted chair reduces pressure on joints and supporting structures, lessens the risk of pressure sores, aids breathing and digestion, and improves circulation. It’s about so much more than just sitting comfortably and relaxing (although that’s important, too!).

Tall or small…

If you’re taller or smaller than average, you may well have struggled throughout your life with ill-fitting things. From clothing to kitchen counters, nothing seems to be designed to fit or use comfortably when you’re at one end or the other of the height scale. But, when it comes to rise recliners, you don’t need to worry! There’s a vast range available to cater for people of all shapes and sizes … and if there’s nothing ‘off the shelf’ to perfectly match your proportions, there are several chairs that can be made-to-measure, too.

Most of the chairs that we offer are available in a range of sizes, some ‘small’, ‘medium’ and ‘large’, or others having a choice of cushion depths and widths. There are also a number of models that specifically address the needs of taller and smaller people, such as The Tall, part of the Olympia Collection, which is great for people of 6’ and over. Available in 3 chair styles with a choice of motor, The Tall has a luxurious pocket sprung cushion, a choice of 4 backs, 3 seating movements to choose from and a whole range of fabrics. It has a 20 stone weight limit.

For those of smaller stature, The Repose Rimini Express comes in a choice of sizes including petite, while the Repose Olympia not only has standard petite and super petite sizes available … it also addresses the other end of the scale with ‘Grande’ and ‘Tall’ sizes, too. In fact, this model offers a total of 8 different sizes.
