Our Guide to Buying a Bariatric Rise and Recline Chair

What is a bariatric rise and recline chair?

Bariatric chairs are designed for larger individuals.  They operate as any other riser recliner to support active and independent living at home, but with the required dimensions and design to offer comfort to those of bigger proportions.

Bariatric chairs are designed and manufactured with a stronger frame and heavier duty motors to enable the leg lifts, recliners and tilting mechanisms to safely support users up to 50 stone in weight.

Choosing your bariatric riser recliner

As with any riser recliner, it’s imperative that you choose a chair that’s right for you personally.  Consider health conditions and individual needs both now and in the future.  Do you need additional lumbar or head support? Will circulatory issues mean that high leg lift is a desirable feature?  Is pressure relief an important factor for you?  Do you need removable cushions or breathable or wipeable fabric? With bariatric chairs it’s also important to know your weight in order to select the appropriate model.  We supply various bariatric chairs suitable for users up to 35, 40 and 50 stone in weight so you can choose the right one for your comfort and for the chair’s performance and longevity.  The wrong chair, or one that’s not designed with your specific proportions in mind, can lead to physical problems due to lack of support and also rapid deterioration of the chair.  That’s why it’s really important to know your current weight accurately – if you’re unsure, your healthcare professional may be able to help you with measuring this.

As well as the chair’s overall weight capacity, the leg lifts also vary in capacity from 9 stone to 25 stone, and seat widths range up to 30 inches, too.  Again, it’s vital that these dimensions are accurately measured in order to provide support where it is needed most and so that your seating position is not cramped, to avoid discomfort and chafing, but also snug enough to prevent slipping or slouching.  It’s also important that the chair is measured correctly to make sure it lasts.  For example, a 35-stone chair may be correct for your overall weight but if it has a leg lift of 9 stone, this may not be appropriate for someone with heavy legs caused by water retention and oedema, which could cause the leg raise mechanism to break. Getting the correct advice is imperative.

Our chair experts are always on hand to offer help, seating assessments or even bring chairs for you to test in the comfort of your own home.  We’ll help you to make the right choice!

Comfort without compromise

There is, of course, a full range of fabric and colour choices available in our bariatric riser recliners, as with our standard range, so your chair can perfectly match your taste and décor.  You can also choose from various cushion styles and fillings for optimal comfort, with advanced adjustability and pressure care including heavy-duty foam or gel cushioning for those more at risk of pressure problems.  Back styles range from split to waterfall design, with individually adjustable cushions – add or remove filling to suit your personal needs.

All of our bariatric chairs are dual motor, with tilt in space and high leg lift available on some models to enable the legs to be lifted above the hips, which is beneficial for various health conditions including circulation problems.  Some models, like the Arden, also offer an extending footrest, providing a longer overall chaise length for better lower leg support.
